Weaves

One theme that continues to be prevalent in my work is the complexity of imperfection. This is how even in the most simple and organic objects or brushstrokes can reveal an imperfection that changes the direction of that object.

When I was working in the fashion industry I was introduced to the magnificence and complexity of fabrics. Fabric and material rally is the ultimate optical illusion. On the surface a fabric appears smooth and even ordered. Pull that fabric apart and you start to see how it has been woven, the small imperfections in the thread and the patterns that interconnect.

How a fabric has interwoven textures and can appear completely different according to the light, its make-up and how it moves inspires me and motivates me to use this in my work. When I first started exploring the Weaves on canvas, what appealed to me was the magic of a thread of color on top of, and next to, another and how this changed the hue.

When I was exploring weaves, I started painting strings of color and then layering them over each other to see how they would look.

The discovery process for me was enlightening. I found that using this process, I could create color that goes under and over weaving its way from one end of the canvas to other, changing and morphing depending on the direction. The weaves and colors take on a life of their own and create a completely new texture.

These strings of color and textures aren’t uniform or predictable. They are imperfect lines that keep their pattern and weave together to bring the whole piece to fruition. I further play with perceptions and expectations by using contrasting colors that are not really meant to work together, sit in a created harmony.

What makes this series unique is that the combinations of colors, lines, textures are limitless as are the perspectives and interpretations depending on how light plays against the piece and what the viewer is drawn to. The combinations and the permutations are limitless as are the viewer’s interpretations – it’s almost magical.
